Gabucci specifies Italian wools including Casentino
The wool in our suits tends to be English or Italian, even where the clothes are manufactured in Germany or Holland. We have a long tradition of sourcing and specifying Italian wool for our suits, coats and jackets.
One of our favourites is Casentino, a wool from Tuscany, both durable and water proof and a favourite of Audrey Hepburn, someone really known for her style.
We read today in the New York Times that the workers are facing a threat of closure and that production could be moved to another part of Italy. This hopefully won’t happen and discussions are underway but it highlights the issues of craftspeople creating the beautiful cloths we want to wear.
Casentino cloth has been popular since the 14th century with traders and Florentine lords, and was popular in the 19th century with both Verdi and Puccini. It has quite a history.
We believe in maintaining tradition and quality and supporting craftspeople who create beautiful cloth that produces the clothes we sell. We take sustainability seriously and want to avoid unnecessary waste and transport and maintaining small communities and their livelihoods is important.
